I am an interdisciplinary creative, primarily in the fields of literary arts, performance art, and visual design. My primary vision is to enlighten, to create thought-provoking work that gives my audience a chance to confront the major issues of our world. The oppression, the traumas, the beauty, the sweetness. The duality of the human experience intrigues me, the ebbs and flows signify Nature, or Life itself. My inspirations run the gamut from Morrison to Missy Elliot, from Zora to Doechi. But those are just the surface level responses to the question of what inspires me. Deeper would be late night dreams that keep me up at night, a menagerie of visions and voices that are familiar yet strange. Being out in nature, exploring the hidden mysteries in the woods. Gazing up at the sky at night, cloaking my body with the subtle glow of the moon. Deeper still would be the folklore and language of Southern African American culture, the hidden meanings behind every “...mmhhmm” and sideways glance. Being able to continue the traditions of my culture, to serve as a 21st griot motivates me through the difficulties that can occur throughout the creative process. My hope is that I can continue to create the work that moves me, and be able to serve as an inspiration to audiences and other artists.
